For starters, I just want you to know one thing: I feel your pain. The Midwest doesn’t take too kindly to my curls and one the first people I met here told me that his hair broke off during the winter because it was dry… guess who ain’t got time for NONE of that?
Cold air and hair of any kind just doesn’t mix, so you will need to change up your regimen (refer to last week’s post about regimens if you are unfamiliar with the term) to best fit your weather situation. Try this:
The LOC Method. I never really had to implement this method until I moved to this colder climate and I can’t, for the life of me, figure out how I went all these years without it. LOC stands for Liquid (or Leave In), Oil, Cream. In that order, apply your respective products to your hair and you will see such a difference in your hair. I like to use Giovanni Direct Leave-In on top of damp hair, coupled with castor oil (it’s thicker for the colder months and a little goes a long way) and I finish up with styling using whatever cream based product I’m diggin’ at the time. Maybe it should be called the LOCO Method because I for sure add a little oil to seal all of that in – am I crazy for that?! There is a method to my madness, I assure you that my hair appreciates all the TLC I give it during this drying time.
Oh, and don’t forget to moisturize as much or as little as you need throughout the week.
Lastly, you can wear a hat. Single twists, single braids, flat twists, cornrows, and low buns are all great styles to couple with hats. I’ve even managed to get my loose natural curls under a hat or two! My suggestion? Line your hat with a silk/satin scarf or bonnet before you put it on… you know, to protect those beautiful curls. And always remove your hat in the privacy of the bathroom, preferably in front of the mirror. Hat hair ain’t cute, boo!
