How to Pack a Carry On Bag [List]

Bag lady… you gone miss yo’ bus.  You can’t hurry up ’cause you got too much stuff – Erykah Badu

I am the self-proclaimed queen of packing a bag.  I carry everything I need and rarely (unless planned ahead of time) have to buy an item that I forgot.  Typically, when I travel, I only pack a carry-on bag.   Carry-ons are the ultimate way to travel, if you ask me.  You never have to wait on your luggage, worry about it coming late or delayed, or succumb to baggage fees.

It also allows for you to jump flights if need be.  I remember I was on my way to Miami and my flight was delayed so much so, that I would miss my connecting.  I was in total panic because the next flight out wasn’t until the next afternoon!  Thinking on my feet, I asked the person at the desk if there were any other flights – and there were!  She asked if I checked in a bag, I said no, and was able to get a seat on the flight just like that.  The man behind me, however, was not as fortunate as he had to “stay with his bags”. #suckstobehim

If I plan on traveling for less than 5 days, I only pack a carry-on bag.  However, if I am traveling for 6+ days, I will opt for a check in bag.  Like I said before, I know how to pack a carry on bag.  Here are some tips I have for packing a carry-on bag:

Pack your essentials first.  You need those so you can’t skimp out on them.  If anything in your bag has to get the boot, it won’t be these things (think underwear, toothpaste, etc.).

Plan your outfits to be multipurpose items.  The key to making this successful is to get in the mind frame of layering pieces.  Okay, so it may be cold where you are going… but that does not mean you have to pack your bulkiest sweater.  Knits are the better choice.  Opt for clothing that can be layered on top of other pieces to keep in your warmth and save space in your luggage.  A color I would avoid packing for multi-purposing would be white for many reasons.  It is easy to stain and shows a lot of dirt (think Men shirt collars)!

Remember the 3-1-1 Rule. 3 oz containers – that fit into a 1 quart size baggie – Per 1 person.  I have seen people cursing, throwing a fit, and in complete tears because they fail to follow this rule.  TSA will, I REPEAT, they WILL throw away your items if they do not fit these specifications… or they will ask you to check in your bag.  Be smart about it and pack the right items to avoid issues later.

Pack only the shoes you need and limit them to four pair (including the ones you wear on the plane).  Shoes take up A LOT of room in your luggage, so limit them in quantity.  Also, remember to pack these after you have packed your essentials since they are space takers. NOTE: If you are packing bulky shoes such as boots and chunky heels, you will have to cut back on the quantity.

Avoid overpacking.  Do you really need that extra magazine?  Can you live without that bulky sweater?  Do you  have to have your whole make-up collection or are you really going to cut your hair with those clippers while you’re there?  Leave it at home.

Remember your purpose for the trip.  Do you plan on shopping while you’re there? Is it a special occasion where you may have to bring some gifts/items back home with you?  Have some space so that you can enjoy these things and not have to forfeit those items.

During this Holiday Season, plan to pack light and carry what you need.  Airlines will kindly charge you with baggage fees, so be smart!  I’m heading to Paris for Christmas and to bring in the New Year (get on my level, LOL)!

What are your plans?  Are you traveling?
