Brown Sugar, Babe

All types of brown sugar. Photos via Google Search

When I think of brown sugar, my mind immediately goes to D’Angelo and his dynamic voice on his single, Brown Sugar (the way he plays the keys is unreal)!  I also think of it being in those delicious molasses cookies… *in Homer Simpson voice* Mmm, Gingerbread Cookies.  Oh, and don’t forget Taye Diggs in that movie Brown Sugar… *in church voice* WELL! As delicious as all those thoughts sound, did you know brown sugar was good for your skin, too?
Exfoliation.  Brown sugar is gritty in texture because of its small granules, making it perfect for exfoliating dead skin cells.  It is gentle enough to use daily, but I would suggest only using it 2-3 times a week.  Be sure to not scrub your face off; exfoliation, not facial/body mutation.

Cheap and plentiful.  Brown sugar is relatively inexpensive, and comes in large enough bags that will allow for you to make multiple scrubs (if you don’t eat it first)!

Combats dry skin.  There is moisture locked inside of brown sugar that causes it to feel more like wet sand than gritty sand (like regular white sugar).  During/post exfoliation, deposits of brown sugar’s vitamin B (mainly from the molasses found in it) can enter the skin, combating dryness and making your skin smooth to the touch.  Vitamin B is also known for protection against UV rays and anti-aging.  Additionally, if you are experiencing dry scalp, adding brown sugar to your shampoo can help scrub away the dead cells that mainly lead to dandruff and flakes.

Smells amazing.  Brown sugar, especially in a scrub, is aromatherapy at it’s finest.  Either sex will take liking to the smell, I guarantee.

Unfortunately, brown sugar and white sugar have pretty much the same nutritional value, making it just as bad to eat as any sugary sweet would be… (no benefits there, sorry)!

I made a brown sugar scrub that I am too excited to use. I’ll post the specifics and my thoughts on it soon.  Stay tuned.

  1. Very helpful! I’m going to trying adding it to my shampoo because I suffer from dry scalp something bad. I will let you know how I like it!

  2. I made a white sugar scrub a few years back. My results weren’t too bad, though nothing to brag about. Never thought of using brown sugar, thanks for the tip!

  3. Had a brown sugar body scrub a few years back…not sure why I didn’t keep it around…I think I’ll try adding it in my facial routine for a week or so just to see how that goes. By the way, purchased some African black soap after reading your review on it…..and I’m in LOVE. Good stuff! Love this blog…keep it coming!
