Paris – Day Seven – Opium & Other Addictions

Remember in the last post how I said Notre Dame had the longest line ever known to man and that we dipped out on seeing the inside?  Well, we tried again today and with much success we got in.  The line moved quickly and it was free!  The inside of the cathedral is BEAUTIFUL to say the least.  There was actually a service going on when we came in, and the all the signs said “SILENCE” but apparently people cannot read or don’t care… it was lightweight noisy.  We were allowed to take pictures here, so I snapped a couple.  Take a look-see:

Inside the Notre Dame

We finished our visit with a prayer inside of the church and walked to the crypt.  It amazes me how something so old can be so preserved.  I posed the question about if technology has crippled us from taking pride in works or art.  I see new housing developments going up everyday and I have yet to see anything as majestic as older buildings.  Lohski (instagram) left a comment on one of my pictures that read, “There is something so much more pleasant about these buildings than sky scrapers.”  I totally agreed with that statement and replied, “Less uniformity. More individuality.”

Left the Notre Dame, went straight to the Sainte Chapelle.  This was yet another line in which we couldn’t  cut.  They pretty much did a strip search prior to entry, but the stained glass found inside made the wait well worth it:

Sainte Chapelle – 2nd Floor , 1st Floor, and Outside

These stained glass images depict stories in the Bible from Genesis to Revelations.  Saint Chapelle is facing restoration and it will take an estimated 10 million Euro to finish the project.  It, along with the Conciergerie, are the oldest buildings found in the city.  We didn’t take the time to read all the Bible stories on the windows; taking the pictures were enough for us.

Next, we visited the Conciergerie.  From the brochure information, we were expecting to see a prison in where Marie Antoinette was held until she was beheaded.  I mean, we saw that, but we also got this:

From Top Left Clockwise: a Deer, a Bear, an Aardvark, and a Horse

It is freakier in person, you just don’t know what you’re missing by not seeing it.  VERY abstract art to say the least.  Even the short films and music was eerie.  But you know what? I can appreciate it because it goes back to what I was saying before – less uniformity, more individuality.  This art absolutely dares to be different and that’s probably why it is on display now.  It is definitely like nothing I have ever seen before.

The last thing on our list was to visit the world famous “Opium” shoe store.  They specialize in the sell of Retro Jordans and Nikes.  They had a good selection, but they were also very pricey.  We left empty handed, but we took these pictures to remember the store:

Oh, and since I am addicted to shopping and we were in the district and all… you know I had to cop a few things for myself.  We are going back to tomorrow, too!! I haven’t had my fix the whole time I’ve been here which is pretty good for me.  I’m wylin’ out tomorrow, though. BALEEDAT!

Since all of these things are within walking distance of our hotel, it took no time for us to get home tonight.  We made it back in time to watch some English movies on the telly.  We love it when we can understand that is going on and not have to guess.  Now playing “Red Riding”… in English and I’m still confused.    -___-
