The Lotus Bracelet

Do you know what your beads mean?  Last week after brunch, some friends and I stopped by a booth and took a peek at some handmade bracelets… you know, the ones with the beads.  They come in many different bead colors, some adorned with charms and are normally unisex ranging in bead size of 8mm to 10mm.  I’ve purchased my fair share of these types of bracelets, but I was really struck by these.  Remembering what a girlfriend of mine shared with me about her beads and how important it was to know exactly what you’re wearing (which makes complete and total sense to me), I was glad to see that the owner of Lotus & Lava, Lisa Mahowald, included a bead and charm explanation of all the materials she used in her original creations. After reading a few, I decided I would try on and purchase the lotus bracelet as it felt it best represented me and would serve as a constant reminder of what I seek in life.

Both the bracelet and the charm are “lotus”.  The following are explanations for both the charm and the beads (and were both included in the packaging for the bracelet):
The lotus flower (the charm) represents a symbol of fortune and new beginnings.  It grows in muddy water, and it is this environment that gives forth the flower’s first and most literal meaning: rising and blooming above the murk to achieve enlightenment.

Like the lotus flower, which grows and beautifully blooms in muddy water, the lotus seed (the beads) symbolizes spiritual growth and the ability to rise above obstacles.  Also said to increase one’s devotion, peace of mind, and inner beauty.

Now of course, I had to go research more on my own and I’ve found explanations that range from spiritual knowledge/growth and the power to be in the world, but not of the world (pretty much the same explanation given upon purchase).

And really, these bracelets don’t have to have a “meaning” to those who wear them.  Yes, it is nice to know what the beads symbolize, but just because something means that to you doesn’t mean it means that to others.  Someone may like it because it’s pretty and it means nothing more than that… others may like the symbolism.  Whatever floats your boat.  For me, besides the beautiful craftsmanship, I love the meaning of this bracelet and plan on wearing it often.
