Postpartum Shedding and How to Combat It

Postpartum Shedding?

A follower writes –

Hey pRoy! You have a beautiful daughter!!!  My question is about your hair – are you experiencing any postpartum shedding?  What can I do to combat it?  Anything can help at this point!  Thanks!!

Looking into the Past

Here I am, eight months postpartum and guess who hasn’t completely lost their edges? Me.

That’s not to say they aren’t thinner, though.  There are definitely some peek-a-boo spots, however they are mainly in the areas of where I had some prior thinning due to chemical processing.  The above picture was taken around 5 months postpartum.

I remember a few years back I was asked a question about postpartum shedding by way of ‘askpRoy’ (you can read it here).  At that time, I had to do investigative research because I had not yet had a baby.  I even found myself revisiting that question during my pregnancy and immediately after postpartum.

Now, having dealt with it, I see clearly that each case varies.

Castor Oil

To many of my friends, I’ve recommended using castor oil (or jamaican black castor oil) on their edges, gently massaging the area with oil daily.

Prenatal Nation

Guess who still takes their prenatal vitamins? *raises hand*

Since I am breastfeeding, I take a prenatal daily.  I really do feel like it has helped with keeping my edges in tact and many women in my breastfeeding support groups boasts of the same benefits.

Pictured above are two brands that I highly recommend and used pre and post natal (currently, I am using Whole Food’s 365 Brand Vegetarian Prenatal Vitamins in conjunction with Garden of Life Probiotics, although if I were pregnant I would do the above two because – smells).

No Tension Styling

I personally took the approach of  doing nothing to my edges – no tension styling.  I’ve cut my hair back into the taper cut which is probably the best thing I’ve ever done.  This was all done prior to my edges thinning because I didn’t really have time to do my hair anymore.  Now, I can say it’s the most clutch hair move I’ve made in a while.

Since my sides are short, I finger style them only when necessary, and because my top is so long, I mainly wear my hair toward my face, so onlookers wouldn’t see my edges ANYWAY!  Problem solved without any witchcraft required.  Edges flourishing without any hassle.
